You and your families are cordially invited to Oxford Elementary School’s 100 Year Anniversary Weekend celebration.

There are two events, the Harvest Faire (Oxford’s annual carnival and book sale with a food booth, games and prizes). This event demonstrates that the ‘Oxford Spirit’ is still alive and kicking and is really geared towards families with kids or for Oxford Alum who would like the opportunity to come see the school and will be held at Oxford School at 1130 Oxford Street (between Eunice & Los Angeles Streets) on Saturday, October 16th from 11 AM to 3 PM.

The second event is the main event and will be a no-host Potluck Picnic on Sunday, October 17th to celebrate Oxford School’s 100 Year Anniversary held at Cordonices Park located just a few blocks from Oxford School at 1201 Euclid Avenue in Berkeley (Euclid @ Eunice Streets). This event will be held on Sunday, October 17th from 10am to 2pm and is for people who love Oxford school (adults/kids).

Please bring your families, a picnic basket with food and drinks and then a dish to share with others, a picnic blanket or fold up chairs to sit on and any frisbees/balls/etc. for the kids. We have a picnic area (area #2) reserved for the event but there are limited tables so many of you will want to sit on the grass. You may also want to bring any Oxford photos/memorabilia that you would like to share with the others.

When you RSVP feel free to share a positive memory or school tradition from your days at Oxford.

Also, please sure to spread the word to other Oxford Families and faculty/staff who attended Oxford over the past 100 years by forwarding them this invitation or printing it out and hand-delivering it to them if they don’t have an email address. We are spreading the word for this event by word-of-mouth.

Please wear casual/comfortable clothing as these events are informal.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Mike Mayeri (Oxford Alum ’76) & The Oxford Anniversary Team

P.S. If you would like to volunteer to help with this event, please email Mike Mayeri @ ilovenetworking@gmail.com

“This school was opened in 1910, with Mrs. Clara Partidge in charge. . . .”

“At the close of the first day of school in the Oxford building, August 4th, 1910, there were 99 children enrolled in nine grades under the charge of three teachers: Mrs. Partridge, Miss Porter, and Miss Newton. Three rooms in the shell had already been completed, two in the east wing, and one in the north wing. Now, in November, 1917, there are nine regular class rooms occupied, and classes are conducted in the principal’s office, the teachers kitchen and dining room, and a kindergarten in the small tower room over the furnace room. . . . “

“The Oxford School was opened when the Intermediate School system had been established for five months. . . .”

“During our first term there were 107 families represented in our enrollment.. . . .”

If you’re wondering where all this information comes from, there’s a whole “invisible” side of web browsing. When you click on a link, your web browser not only asks the hosting computer for the web page, but also tells it what computer and web browser you are using; this information is often used to adjust the content of the web page to make it display best on your machine. Also, when you click on a link from a search engine, that search engine tells the web site computer which term you used to find them.

http://www.youtube.com/channel/bhs80s

I created groups for these two decades because I knew of videos for them. If you know of videos from other decades, please start a group for them and I’ll post a link here.

Mark your calendars! The remnants of the Class of 78 30 year reunion committee and friends from nearby classes have organized a summer picnic for classes of ’74 through ’79, plus any other folks who may know people from those classes.

Date: Sunday, August 23, 2009

Time: Noonish until we tire out.

Food: Potluck. But we’ll have a hot coals and a few “starter” items.

Exact details: To be arranged and posted within the next month or so.

We’ll be working out the details soon, but our general idea is that we’ll provide coals and a miscellanous set of starters. We’ll be asking $10 to help cover the reservations, coals, and other starter items (as well as a bit of food so out-of-town folks won’t have to bring anything.

And classes of “74 and ’79, don’t miss your own reunions this summer! Click your class link in the menu on the right. –>
